Crankshaft Dampers

Crankshaft Dampers

Tip Top Engineering have supplied over 250 crankshaft dampers for many applications, including vintage, prewar and post war cars.  Six cylinder engines MUST have a damper and four cylinder engines see benefits too.  The only damper principle suitable for such applications is a viscous fluid damper, which is why this is the only damper type we sell.

The damper can prevent the crankshaft breakage, but it will extend engine bearing life in every application.

Rubber and elastomer dampers degrade with time, because that’s what rubber does! Lanchester dampers are very good, but are difficult to keep serviced, i.e. clean and working properly. Viscous dampers really are the best solution.

Fitment notes for our dampers:

  1. They can be fitted either way around, facing inwards or outwards.
  2. They are supplied ready balanced.  The damper is balanced, but you may choose to balance the carrier for the damper, depending on complexity.  Please discuss this.
  3. The damper does not need tuning to each engine; they are a universal damper, providing the inertia ring inside the damper is heavy enough.
  4. They fit up to a 3.5 litre engine; if your engine is much bigger, you can fit two dampers back to back.
  5. Any damper is most effective on the front end of the engine.  If you absolutely have no choice they can be fitted at the flywheel end.
  6. As well as supplying the damper, we can also make the carrier for the damper for you.  You can also make your own if you prefer.  Please use the attached drawing of the damper to plan your installation.
  7. Pulleys can be incorporated into the damper carrier.  Also oil seals with scrolls or lip seals.  Anything is possible at Tip Top Engineering.  We have designed all sorts of installations!
