Background

Background of Tip Top Engineering
Our company was established in 2004.  We approach all engineering work based on practical experience combined with a mechanical engineering degree.  Most challenges and problems on such early motorcars require a proper engineering solution, based on a thorough understanding of the original design intent.  Our approach at Tip Top Engineering is to blend both old techniques and sometimes modern manufacturing, as required by each individual challenge.  We have a machinist specialising in CNC and spark eroding, and we also have a superb pattern maker on hand if the volumes are economical to make a casting.

We are based in West Yorkshire in the centre of the U.K. yet only two hours from Kings Cross.  Some customers catch a train after delivering their car, for others we provide transport. We undertake all kinds of mechanical work, especially gearboxes, engines, axles and chassis.  Whole cars are typical or just parts to re-build, repair, replace or copy.  The cars which are run by our company – particularly the Riley ERA – demonstrate our success in restoration, preparation, development and driving.  We also run cars for people, either demonstrating or competing in them.  Our approach is to be flexible while enjoying working with different customers with different requirements.

We operate a very economical workshop with low overheads and together with our superb workmanship deliver terrific value for money to our customers.  We provide lots of feedback, photographs and make decisions together with the customer, guided as required.

About James
Since 17, I have been devoted to my hobby of motorcars, enjoying all aspects of competition in the Vintage Sports Car Club and I have also rallied and raced around Europe.

I gained a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship and a Mechanical Engineering degree, blending the academic and the practical skills essential for this type of work.

I have been fortunate enough to drive D type Jaguars, Monza Alfas, Frazer Nashes of all kinds and more, and it has been a huge privilege to be trusted with such important cars.

It was an honour to be the outright speed event record holder at every VSCC event driving the single seater Frazer Nash.  Seeking further competition and a new challenge I then beat my own records driving an ERA racing car and subsequently the ERA Riley and remain the prewar record holder at every British hill climb.  Since the age of 25 my tally of “Fastest Time of the Day” achievements has grown to 75 – but I’m not done yet!

I honestly believe that my success has been because all my cars are self prepared, combined with my ability to understand and drive the motorcars.  Naturally I apply the same passion of my engineering work to my study of driving, encouraging others to improve their skills, and therefore their motoring success and enjoyment.
